His book, The Black Canoe, a study of Bill Reid's sculpture, is a classic of Native American art history and his book The Elements of Typographic Style is considered the "bible" for typographers the . Compiled by Robert Bringhurst, Nine Visits to the Mythworld: Ghandl of the Qayahl Llaanas () features stories told to Swanton by Ghandl, a Haida man in his fifties, blinded by either smallpox or measles. The name Ghandl means creek or fresh water. A missionary christened him Walter McGregor.

    Robert Bringhurst, one of Canada’s leading poets and book designers, worked and studied with Bill Reid throughout the s. The fruits of this association include a much-loved book of stories, The Raven Steals the Light, as well as Bringhurst and Ulli Steltzer’s book The Black Canoe, a study of Reid’s masterly sculpture. He lives on Quadra Island, British Columbia. Skaay of the Qquuna Qiighawaay may have been one of the greatest Native storytellers of all time. Born in the Haida village of Qquuna about and crippled by an injury in middle age, he devoted himself to the art of telling stories.
